Language Death

Fall 2019
Installation Art, Performance Art

This performance and installation created a space to reflect on the preservation of language and culture. I read Language Death by David Crystal within a lighting installation that I designed, built, and animated specifically for this excerpt. As I, or any reader, moves through the text, a magenta light flows over magenta words in the same shade, pushing the reader to hastily deliver the passage in time with the light. Entering and sitting within the space, we felt enveloped and sheltered by what appeared to be a three-dimensional optical illusion, though completely intangible.

Process

This process spanned across physical making, as well as digital making in direct parallel to one another. In order to achieve a truly immersive, phsyically optical illusion, test slides and arrangments were investigated in detail, nights hosted for visitors to walk ina nd out and share their reactions, feedback, and impressions without having pre-given information about the piece. This process fostered a place for visitors to laugh, to jump from ‘wall to wall’ that is being cut through the space, and relish in the disbelief that comes to our senses upon seeing a wall that is not truly, physically there.
